In a Q&A with The Athletic post-match on Monday, Liverpool correspondent James Pearce believes the club would only “maybe” be interested in one West Ham United player should the Irons suffer relegation from the Premier League – Aaron Cresswell.
What did he say?
Well, Pearce was asked by one Reds supporter if he thought the Merseyside outfit would fancy signing any players from the east London club should they go down, and his response was pretty clear.
He said: “There aren’t many people I’d have. Maybe Cresswell as back up to Robertson.”
The left-back played the full 90 minutes at Anfield on Monday night, as David Moyes’ side were narrowly beaten 3-2 having given the hosts an almighty scare having taken a second-half 2-1 lead.
Is Pearce right?
He probably is, to be fair.
Liverpool may have signed players from relegated Premier League sides in the past, with Andrew Robertson himself being an example from Hull City and Gini Wijnaldum another, but the club is at a very different level now.
It would be hard to argue that any West Ham player would be starting for the Reds right now, so you’re automatically looking at back-up options.

However, if the German did want some more experienced cover for Robertson in the summer, then Cresswell could be a good shout.
Let’s see what occurs if the worst does happen for the Hammers.
In other Liverpool news, James Pearce was less than impressed with one Reds player in the win against West Ham, and believes Klopp wasn’t happy with him either…
